The Australian Web Industry Association (AWIA) rose from humble beginnings - a monthly industry evening at a pub in WA. The first night exceeded expectations and soon after a web site and forum were established to further facilitiate networking between participants.
The group was named Port80, and incorporated as a not-for-profit association in 2004 with these aims:
- To further the advancement of the web industry within Australia;
- To educate the general public about the role of professionals in the web industry;
- To foster greater ties with like-minded organisations.
In late 2006, Port80 Inc formally changed its name to its former byline: the Australian Web Industry Association (AWIA). This change was made in order to further its constitutional objectives and to better reflect its fast-growing Australia-wide membership.
